Walmart Donates $500,000 to Help Rejuvenate Urban Ecosystems

Acres for America program to safeguard wildlife habitats in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City

Walmart's Acres for America program is donating $500,000 to help protect, conserve and restore fragile urban ecosystems in Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City. This is the first time the program has helped reestablish critical wildlife habitats in urban areas.

City Year CEO and Co-Founder Praises Mayor Bloomberg for Multi-Million Dollar Minority Youth Initiative

City Year, Inc., CEO and Co-Founder Michael Brown issued the following statement today on Mayor Michael Bloomberg's announcement of a $130 million initiative addressing the societal challenges that disproportionately impact young, minority males.

City Year, an education-focused nonprofit whose teams of diverse young adults provide full-time whole school intervention to keep students in school and on track to graduate, has teams serving in 20 New York City schools and in 20 other U.S. cities with high-need schools.

The Measles Initiative Vaccinates One Billion Children in First Decade

Milestone marks progress and points to need for funding and political will to eradicate measles

The Measles Initiative today announced it has helped vaccinate one billion children in more than 60 developing countries since 2001, making significant gains in the global effort to stop measles.

The child who received the history-making measles vaccination was one of 3.5 million immunized in Mozambique this May. The immunization campaign was sponsored by the Measles Initiative's five founding partners – the American Red Cross, United Nations Foundation, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), UNICEF, and World Health Organization (WHO).

New York Hate Crimes Rose in 2010, New York Civil Rights Violation Lawyer Comments

According to the 2010 annual report on hate crime in New York State, hate crime reports were up by 2 percent in 2010 compared with 2009.

The number of New York hate crime incidents was up 2 percent last year statewide, according to a report made available to New York civil rights violation lawyers by the Division of Criminal Justice Services. There were 699 hate crimes in total throughout New York State, 16 more than in 2009.

DNC: Mitt Romney's Not Letting The Truth Get in the Way of a Good Story

Mitt Romney's known for not letting the facts getting in the way of a partisan political attack. Earlier this week at a press conference in Los Angeles, Romney used the backdrop of a struggling real estate development to hit the President on the economy. The problem with Romney's backdrop? The development had been badly damaged during a 1994 earthquake, went out of businesses in the earlier 2000s and then a few months ago foreclosed on by a maxed-out Romney donor's company.
