Forbes editors this week ranked Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) among the Best Colleges for Women and Minorities in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and among America's Most Diverse Colleges.

NYU-Poly ranked seventh for women and minorities enrolled in undergraduate STEM programs.

"Producing more graduates with STEM degrees is an important goal for any college: The majors with the highest starting and mid-career salaries are nearly all STEM degrees, according to Payscale.com's 2010-2011 College Salary Report," Forbes reported. Women and minorities are historically underrepresented in STEM education and careers.

NYU-Poly ranked sixth in ethnic and racial diversity among the Forbes Best American Universities. NYU-Poly was the only private undergraduate institution on Forbes' top 10 diversity list.

"Throughout our 156-year history, NYU-Poly has been a portal to success for the best and brightest technical students from Brooklyn and New York, traditionally among the most diverse immigrant hubs in America," said NYU-Poly Provost Elizabeth Dianne Rekow. "In recent years, we have also been attracting more women to STEM fields through recruiting, developing talent at the pre-college level, and the mentoring provided by our faculty. By bringing together scholars with diverse outlooks and backgrounds, we find that research improves, and students benefit in their studies and their careers."

Earlier this semester, Forbes ranked NYU-Poly 10th in the nation among "Colleges That Will Make You Rich."

U.S. News & World Report ranks NYU-Poly tied for fourth among all national schools in ethnic and racial diversity of its undergraduate student body. NYU-Poly's own statistics show no ethnic or racial group comprises a majority of its undergraduates.
